Nutrition Responsibilities

At Variety we recognize the direct relationship between proper nutrition and the ability of a student to learn. In fact, nutrition is critical to the academic success of the students at your school. Nutrition is more than having enough food; it means eating the right balance of foods with the proper nutrients.

Here are a few of our nutritional practices:

  • Replacing canned fruits and vegetables with fresh fruits and vegetables on an increased basis. Fresh apples, oranges, bananas, pears, and peaches
  • Protein and other nutrients such as B-vitamins, iron and zinc are offered in the form of cooked lean meat, poultry or fish using healthy food preparation techniques. We also provide nuts; seeds and trail mix snacks in one-ounce size portions or less
  • Sauces, dressings, and dips are offered in one-ounce servings or less to decrease excess calorie intake

Preparation methods:

  • Baking most all of our foods. Absolutely nothing is fried
  • Utilizing Mrs. Dash, a table salt substituteMrs_Dash_Original_Seasoning_Blend
  • Having a Certified Dietician available – our menus are checked to ensure we have met all of the guidelines of the school lunch program

Nutrition Education:

Educating parents and students about proper nutrition and how it relates to school learning is one of the best ways to increase participation in a school lunch program.

We offer several programs to help boost participation, these include:

  • Nutritional Characters
  • Food Around the World
  • Spice of Life
  • Smart Snacks
  • Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP)
  • Farm to School
  • Boost Breakfast
